Widely considered the greatest hockey player of all time Gretzky, amassed 2,857 points including 894 goals in his illustrious career. December 10 SU Charity Sports Auction to benefit Upstate Cancer Center

October 27, 2011 –The Syracuse University Sport Management (SPM) Club will hold its Seventh Annual Charity Sports Auction on Saturday, December 10 at the Carrier Dome. Silent bidding on hundreds of auction items, including sports memorabilia and hands-on experiences, electronics and tickets to major sporting events, will take place in the backcourt during the SU men’s basketball game against George Washington. Doors will open at 5:00 p.m. for the auction through Gates A, B, C & E. All other gates will open as usual at 5:30 p.m., prior to the start of the game at 7:00 pm.

All of the proceeds from this year’s auction will benefit the Upstate Cancer Center. The SPM Club is a student-run organization in the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics’ Sport Management Department. Since its founding in 2005, the Club has raised nearly $120,000 for local charities, to include the Syracuse Boys and Girls Clubs, the American Diabetes Association of Central New York, the Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital, the CNY Ronald McDonald House and the CNY SPCA.

During the past six years, the SPM Club has been recognized with the Chancellor’s Award for Public Engagement and Scholarship and received the 2009 Orange Circle Award from the SU Alumni Association to honor SU alumni, friends, faculty, staff and students who have achieved extraordinary accomplishments in support of others.

“The commitment of our students to this event is well beyond an experiential learning experience,” said Kate Veley, manager, career center and event planning, Department of Sport Management, and 2011 auction chair. “For our students, this event is an important opportunity to make a difference in the Syracuse community. We truly couldn’t be prouder of each and every one of them and the amazing event they are organizing.”

Cancer is the second-leading cause of death in New York and the U.S. One in two men and one in three women will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetimes. Slated to open in 2013, the Upstate Cancer Center will be the region’s most comprehensive resource for the prevention, early detection, diagnosis, treatment and survivorship of cancer and related disorders. Upstate University Hospital is also the only hospital in Central New York to specialize in adult and pediatric cancer care. The SPM Club is working to make this “green” facility a reality and “Give Hope a New Home.”

The purchase of a game ticket for the December 10 Syracuse men’s basketball game will include access to the charity sport auction. This weeks feature auction item is a football autographed by Miami Dolphins legend Dan Marino. He was selected as the 27th overall pick in the 1983 NFL Draft out of the University of Pittsburgh. During his illustrious 16-year NFL career Marino was a 9 time Pro Bowler and 3 time First Team All-Pro. Marino finished his career in 1999 having played his entire career with the Miami Dolphins and currently ranks 2nd All Time in both Passing Yards and Touchdowns. Despite never winning a Super Bowl he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2005 on the first ballot.

This weeks featured auction item of the week is a baseball signed by Barry Bonds from his record setting season in 2001 when he hit a record setting 73 home runs in one season. Bonds is Major League Baseball’s all time home run leader with 762 home runs; during his 21 year professional career he was a 14 time All Star and 7 time NL MVP. He is the only player in Major League history to hit more than 500 home runs in a career and steal more than 500 bases in a career.

This weeks featured auction item is a football autographed by Atlanta Falcons teammates Matt Ryan and Roddy White. Matt Ryan was the 3rd overall selection in the 2008 NFL Draft and has thrown for over 10,000 yards and 66 touchdowns in his first 3 professional seasons. Since joining the league in 2005, Roddy White has been named to 3 Pro Bowls and has amassed over 400 career receptions.

The Sport Management Club at Syracuse University have announced that the beneficiary for the 7th Annual Charity  Sports Auction will be Upstate Cancer Center. Upstate Cancer Center is the only multi-purpose cancer research and treatment facility located in the Syracuse, New York, and services people from approximately 17 counties in the Central New York area.
